Air to air heat pumps

What is an air to air heat pump?

An air to air heat pump is an all-in-one heating and cooling system that is electrically powered and designed to provide year-round comfort. Outside air, even on cold days, contains latent heat which can be converted to provide environmentally friendly low cost heating for a range of domestic and commercial properties.

The use of a free, natural resource that is all around us such as air seems to be an obvious choice when you are looking to keep your installation costs to a minimum.

This heating solution also provides an option for those premises with minimal space allowance whilst at the same time providing an efficient heating system in your home or work environment.

The heat pump’s outdoor unit draws in the outside heat difference between the refrigeration gas and the outside temperature. The heat is then compressed and sent to the inside unit where it heats the inside radiator. The air fan then circulates the heated air to the inside environment. An easy-to-use remote control operates the settings for temperature and fan speed.

Our heat pumps are also reversible which means the operation can be reversed to blow cool air into your rooms during warm the summer months too.

Cooling

Although our reversible heat pump is produced with heating in mind it has an excellent cooling function. An on/off heat pump has been known to the marketplace for many years as an air-conditioning unit. The principles are the same, but we have enhanced the heat function. A non harmful gas that boils at -52.6 degrees C is used and by reversing the heating function we benefit from the cold gas passing through to spread cool air into the room with the fan.

Air filtration

Our heat pumps feature advanced air purification technology which is particularly beneficial to allergy sufferers.

Air filters are installed on the internal unit between the air intake and fan. These filters collect dust, bacteria and other particles so to improve the internal room air quality. This filtration system can absorb up to 95% of the bacteria in a home thereby greatly assisting the internal air quality which will greatly help people suffering from asthma or allergies.

Our heat pump is a combined heater, cooler and filtration unit to improve your internal comfort.

Flexible & Versatile

Electric Heat pumps do not require a flue or internal pipe-work, so there are no restrictions on building layout or design and no regulatory or planning issues associated with positioning of flues to restrict you.

The versatility of electric heat pumps can also be a major advantage for home extensions where the existing heating system does not have sufficient capacity to heat extra radiators etc.

As a fuel source electricity is available right across the country and is also ideal in sensitive areas or in listed buildings where structural alterations are difficult. Only electric heat pump systems gives such freedom of design.

Safe & Reliable

Whatever type of heating you specify safety is always an important consideration. Electric heat pumps do not burn fuel internally to generate heat and there are none of the associated safety risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning or explosions. Also, as there are no radiators to leak or burst, there is less risk of damage to completed properties which can be a major concern if properties are empty for a period of time particularly over the winter months. Additionally, with virtually no moving parts to break down or wear out, electric heat pumps are extremely reliable and will normally run satisfactorily for much longer than a conventional gas boiler.

An air to air heat pump has two major components. An  internal and an external unit Your browser may not support display of this image.

  • Internal unit - hangs on an exterior wall. Two hoses pass through the wall between the 2 units. One hose is carrying hot gas from the external unit whilst the other hose is carrying cold gas back.  The fan blows warm air from the internal unit down the wall towards the floor and recycles stale air from ceiling level through its filter so to keep the air in the room clean.
As the air is kept circulating, the temperature in the room will be more even at floor and ceiling level compared to a room heated by radiators which suffers from overheating at ceiling level and underheating at floor level.  A remote control enables flexibility when setting the temperature of your room.

  • External unit - stands on the floor outside the property containing the internal unit. A fan in the external unit blows air onto the element of the heat pump which contains a gas compressed by a compressor pump. From here heat energy from the air passes into the gas which is then sent to the internal unit.
Efficiency

Compare The Heat Air to Air Heat Pump (QC6000) has a coefficient of performance (COP) of 3.6. The CoP is a simple calculation which works out how much energy the heat pump is able to extract from the energy source compared to the amount of electrical energy used by the heat pump. In real terms, this means that more than three and a half times the amount of heat energy comes out than electrical energy goes in!! In some test cases, it has been known to produce upto 6 times the amount of heat energy.

A Heat Pump works on the same basis as a refridgertator except in reverse …..moving heat energy from one place to another.

A domestic fridge moves heat from inside the fridge to outside whereas our Heat Pump moves the heat energy from outside of your property to the inside!

What are the main benefits of heat pumps?

  • Compact design requiring only an outside wall
  • Quiet operation
  • Easy to install, maintain and operate
  • No need for an oil or gas boiler
  • Works down to outdoor temperature of -15 degrees C
  • High efficiency in all temperature ranges
  • Can be used to provide cool air in the summer too
  • Use of natural energy from the earth’s resources at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.
  • Advanced technology air purification, ideal for allergy sufferers capturing up to 98% of air-borne particles
  • Carbon emmissions reduced by 50% against mains gas or 70% against standard electrical heating
  • No risk of explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Auto-defrost function
  • No additional components required
  • Excellent value for money
